Getty Villa

The Getty Villa, located off Highway 1 in Malibu, is the second location opened by the Getty Trust exclusively devoted to showcasing ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art. The Villa is on a much smaller scale with most of the art held in a former modest-sized mansion turned museum. Some highlights of the Villa are the large reflecting pool expanding across the entire “backyard” seemingly leading into the Pacific Ocean in the distance, the various sculptures dotted throughout the gardens, the large outdoor theater meant to mimic theaters of ancient Greece (with live performances), the beautiful ceilings and floors, and an herb garden. I especially love how crisp and clean the building looks against its surroundings.

While I will always love the Getty Center, the Villa is a nice escape from the craziness of LA. It’s small enough that you can walk through its entirety in under two hours. The times I’ve been I have found myself sitting on one of the benches in the side garden imagining what I would do if I owned this beautiful home. 🙂
