In “My City,” as a way to experience and enjoy more of where I live, I will share new and interesting places, restaurants, things to do, etc. as well as some of my tried and true favorites in Orange County and Southern California. Today’s feature is one of my favorite spots in Orange County, the Wedge.
The Wedge is located at the far end of the Balboa Peninsula right across the water from Corona del Mar beach, and is known mostly as a great bodysurfing spot. The area of beach is directly next to the jetty and when conditions are right, waves coming in will meet up with waves formed from the jetty and create a large peak, perfect for surfing. The waves can get up to 30 feet high, depending on weather conditions. On a normal day, you won’t see too many people out there or many people on the beach but when a storm is coming in off the ocean, there could be hundreds of people lined on the shore to watch the body surfers (along with an ambulance parked on the beach).
As I have a fear of swimming in the ocean (and you can forget me body surfing giant waves), you won’t see me out in the water at the Wedge. However, it’s become one of my favorite beach spots. Down on the far corner of the peninsula, it’s much quieter at the end of a neighborhood with some beautiful homes. The beach itself is incredibly wide with a small park to the side overlooking the two jetties where you can watch boats go in and out of the harbor and sometimes see seals and dolphins in the water.
It’s a beautiful place. If you’re ever in the area, make sure to check it out.
